A group of new preachers is gathered in a circle of rocking chairs at a retreat center. We’re having a congenial time, rocking back and forth, talking ourselves through the sermon preparation process. We talk about sitting with the Bible, investigating our questions, exploring the commentaries…but it has become too much for one busy professional. “Listen,” he says, “what I need is a list of which books to buy! Just tell me which books are the best.” I have a few recommendations and some general principles for him to follow when choosing books, but I don’t have a list to give him.
This website is a belated attempt to answer his question. I offer it with some reservations because I believe that buying resources for preaching is more than just running through a shopping list. Most of you will want to discover for yourselves the wide world of resources out there and find which ones best suit your needs rather than have me tell you. Also, as scholarship continues and publishing economies change, new books and electronic resources will be published and old ones revised. Therefore I will give both some general guidelines about how to choose resources and give you lists of some that I can cheerfully recommend. But since I doubt you are entering the lucrative world of preaching with a wad of cash, I will be mindful of economy and say a word about…GETTING THE MOST FOR THE LEAST
