Bible Dictionaries

A Bible dictionary is an indispensable tool for the student of the Bible, helping you to answer many of your “Who, What, Where and When” questions.  Most of them are not simply dictionaries with definitions, but mini-encyclopedias with short articles, photos, maps, charts, and bibliographies.  Here are several one-volume dictionaries based on solid scholarship:

bullet Freedman, David Noel, Editor.  Anchor Bible Dictionary.  Six Volumes.  New York: Doubleday, 1992.  Also available as a CD-ROM.
bullet Achtemeier, Paul J., Editor.  HarperCollins Bible Dictionary.  Revised and Updated Edition.  San Francisco: HarperSanFrancisco, 1996.
bullet Bowker, John Westerdale.  The Complete Bible Handbook.  New York: DK Pub., 1998.
bullet Douglas, J. D., Editor.   New Bible Dictionary.  2nd Edition.  Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity Press, 1996.
bullet Youngblood, Ronald F., Editor.  Nelson’s New Illustrated Bible Dictionary.  Nashville: Nelson, 1995.
